Hurricane And Winter Storm Readiness
12/22/2017 (Permalink)
Being prepared for a storm is something people don’t think about till it happens to them. Over the last several years we have seen devastating storms hit the US, such as Super Storm Sandy hitting the North East, Hurricane Harvey hitting Middle Texas Coast and Hurricane Irma devastating Puerto Rico and Florida which means we should start preparing beforehand. Hurricanes are not the only type storms to be prepared for we have winter storms to worry about too.
The Red Cross tells us the most important items need to get through a storm are:
- Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
- Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare items (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home).
- Flashlight
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible).
- Extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Medications (7-day supply) and medical items
- Multi-purpose tool
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Copies of personal documents (medication list and pertinent medical information, proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies).
- Cell phone with chargers
- Family and emergency contact information
- Extra cash
- Emergency blanket
- Map(s) of the area
